If you have lost all or many of your teeth, you are likely to be embarrassed about smiling. Losing multiple teeth can cause more than just aesthetic problems; gaps left by missing teeth can affect your ability to bite and chew food, taking many things off the menu, while missing teeth can also affect your speech.

Any remaining teeth surrounding a gap can also start to grow at an angle as they attempt to move into the space, making them difficult to clean and further affecting your bite.

A popular solution to missing teeth is dentures. There are two types of denture available: partial dentures and full dentures.

Partial dentures can be used to replace one missing tooth or several missing teeth. Sometimes all teeth need to be removed and replaced, in which case you will need full dentures.

Dentures will help to give you your confidence back in your smile, and will mean you can return to eating a wide range of foods. If you have lost all of your teeth or they all need to be removed, complete dentures will also fill out your face to prevent a saggy look. A denture has the advantages of being relatively inexpensive, quick to make and not requiring any surgery or drilling of nearby teeth.

All of our dentists are trained to provide both partial and full dentures.

Full dentures

If all of your upper or lower teeth need to be removed or have been lost, you will need a full denture. They are usually fitted as soon as your teeth are removed, so you are never left without teeth. Occasionally there may be a delay to allow your gums to heal.

Your dentist will take measurements and impressions of your mouth and send these off to the laboratory for your dentures to be made. A trial or temporary denture may be fitted while your permanent dentures are made up.

Full dentures fit snuggly over your gums and are easy to remove for cleaning. Loose dentures can be stabilised using dental implants.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are used when you have one or several missing teeth. It comprises a plastic or metal plate with the required number of false teeth attached. They are attached to some of your remaining natural teeth using metal clasps to keep it securely in place. It can easily be unclipped and removed for cleaning.

FAQ's

Properly caring for your dentures is essential for keeping them looking their best and avoiding serious oral health problems. The first step in denture care is to properly brush the dentures daily with a soft toothbrush or speciality denture brush. Brush thoroughly, but gently, using a non-abrasive soap or denture paste. Make sure to scrub each surface, both inside and out, as food particles and plaque bacteria can get trapped in these areas. Additionally, this cleaning process will help prevent permanent staining of the plastic material that makes up your dentures.

If you are looking to whiten your dentures like you would natural teeth, this unfortunately cannot be done because of the makeup of the plastic material used to make them. However, there are a variety of over-the-counter cleansers available that can effectively remove most stains from your dentures if used according to the manufacturer's instructions; just be sure not to use any abrasive materials as this could damage the plastic material used on your dentures. Regularly cleaning and maintaining your dentures can help keep them looking good and maintain better health in the long run.
